Climate change, Trump, Brexit, the rise of the right wing, increasing poverty and the increasingly desperate thrashing of late-stage capitalism - the old debate of the artist as societal mirror or social pioneer is becoming more and more obsolete as the reality becomes clearer - there is no political art, there is no activist art - all art is political, all art is politically active. The only question is - what kind of social statement is the artist making? The production of decorative canvases intended to adorn the walls of the wealthy is an active social statement. The creative hijacking of corporate advertising and communications is another.

This session will examine the responsibility of the artist in our epoque, and the opportunities for protest and social change available to active, creative individuals and collectives. It will be carried out by three of the most dynamic collectives active in the diverse fields of humanitarian / anti-capitalist / anti-corporate art: Adbusters , Brandalism and the Center for Political Beauty .

Brandalism is an international collective of artists that challenge corporate power in public space around the world. Corporate advertising influences every aspect of our modern lives: from how we feel about ourselves; our bodies; our understandings of gender, race and class; through to our perceptions of others and the world we live in. Building resistance and resilience to corporate power is at the heart of the culture wars in the 21st century so with nothing more than high-vis jackets, special keys, and shared creative principles we create the world's largest ad takeovers that hold corporate power to account. Brandalism will share tactics and approaches that allow diverse artists to hack the city, challenge corporate power, and get away clean. Expect a deep dive into a range of forms of critical public art and the socio-political history of each. We'll explore solo vs collective actions, subversive tactics and more. Brandalism will also provide practical (action-led) trainings, ensuring participants have a range of resources that enable all participants to begin hacking the city where they live.

Pedro Inoue is a Brazilian born, self taught graphic designer, artist and activist. Since 2010 he joined Adbusters magazine as their creative director, participating in the creation of the 2011 #occupywallstreet meme and poster that helped sparked the worldwide movement #OCCUPY. He has lectured in events and schools in Mexico City, Auckland, Tokyo's Geidai University and most recently, Barcelona's FAD, BAU university, Fabrica in Treviso, Italy and SEE Conference 2019 in Germany. Commercially he has collaborated with clients such as David Bowie, Damien Hirst, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Greenpeace Brazil, William Gibson, Kalaf Epalanga (Buraka Som Sistema) & Brazilian rappers Mano Brown and Criolo.

Pedro is here representing Adbusters, the global network of artists, activists, writers, musicians, designers, poets, philosophers, and punks trying to pull off a radical transformation of the current world order. Adbusters publishes a bi-monthly magazine and invents cultural campaigns that explore the erosion of the mental and physical environment by commercial forces. What does it mean to be alive in today's world? What is the tone that drives our lives, makes us work and buy and sleep and die? Who controls these forces? In their part of this workshop, Adbusters' Pedro Inoue will create an open session brainstorm to dispute the dominant capitalist narratives that control the way information flows in our society. How much fossil fuels can we still take on our bodies and minds? Is the environmental movement the mother of all fights? How can we use creative forms of protest as a way to highjack the narrative on climate change?

The Center for Political Beauty (ZPS) is an assault team that establishes moral beauty, political poetry and human greatness while aiming to preserve humanitarianism. The group's basic understanding is that the legacy of the Holocaust is rendered void by political apathy, the rejection of refugees and cowardice. It believes that Germany should not only learn from its History but also take action. For their part in the session, ZPS representatives Gabriela Langholf and Lotta Dorte will work with the group to form new ways to put humanistic ideals into action, looking at the ZPS's past works and intellectual foundations, then taking the results forward to create new concepts and help participants bring their own ideas into action.



WHERE AND WHEN?

The course takes place at our residential centre in Aulus les Bains. It's two hours south of Toulouse, high in the French Pyrenees, very near the border with Spain. For detailed travel information, see the transport section. The course starts on Wednesday, 31/07/2019. We advise that you arrive the evening before (30/07/2019) - dinner and accommodation that night is included. The course runs for five days, ending on Sunday night. Accommodation on Sunday night is included, then we leave on Monday morning (05/08/2019). If you decide to take the minibus with us, you will be picked up in Toulouse at 6pm on 30/07/2019, and will be back in Toulouse at 11am on 05/08/2019.

You'll find a payment link in the booking confirmation email - follow the link to make a payment (either in full, or the first payment of a four month payment plan). In the latter case, a monthly payment plan will be put in place, so your card will be charged 25% of the fee today, and 25% each month (on the same day) for an additional three months. All card payments are handled by Stripe, and are extremely secure. We don't store any card data ourselves - all of this is handled securely off-site by Stripe. If you have a discount or grant code, you will be able to add it when you follow the payment link in your confirmation email.

Once you've made a payment, you'll receive another email containing your receipt, links to resources, contact information and access to our group chat to discuss the workshop with other participants.
