This course will explore different layers of, and methods for, field recording; from monophonic to ambisonic, to contact, hydrophonic and EMF recording techniques, and then delve into aspects of sound manipulation and composition. The sessions will take elemental (sound) catalysts as a starting point. How can we interact with the environment and use the natural elements such as wind, water, air or fire as sound triggers? For example: wind is a carrier, an element that hits objects, the objects reacts (vibrates) and in turn creates a sound that can be recorded. The movement of the wind has been altered into something else – through natural plugins and acoustics. We will look into various ways these sound happenings can be recorded, both technically and aesthetically, and put into context.

Benny will share his methods of working, and offer mentoring to participants. Sessions will involve:
Exploration of field recording techniques, resonances, examining different sonic qualities of surfaces
How to overcome obstacles, transfer visual ideas into sound, degrees of experimentation, sound catalysts
Introduction to specific tools (such as Logic ProX and Izotope) - basic methods of editing and preparing your audio recordings for use in a composition, installation and/or film.
Individual feedback sessions, group playback sessions, and show-and-tell
