In 2021 Jlin carried out her first CAMP workshop - entitled "Vulnerability in Creativity", the session took a deep dive into the journey of every artist as an individual, exploring the many ways in which every musician must build trust, confidence and an understanding of their own processes.

This year Jlin is back with another carefully constructed workshop, examining the power of self-exploration in composition. Over five videocall sessions, you'll take an epic inward journey of understanding your creative processes and modes of expression.

In Jlin's words: "This intimate composition course delves into the process of using personal experiences and self-awareness as inspiration for music creation. It emphasizes the significance of understanding oneself and the emotional connections that can fuel creativity. Through self-reflection techniques like meditation, journaling, and dream interpretation, artists can explore their emotions, memories, and vulnerabilities to translate them into authentic sonic forms."

The sessions will follow a detailed plan:

1. Introduction

• The vital relationship between music and personal experiences
• Crossing into composition through authenticity and emotion

2. Understanding Yourself

• Self-Reflection
• Self-Audit
• Facing Yourself

3. Emotional Connection

• Finding connection in composition through good and/or bad writing days
• Why emotion is intrinsic to melodic, harmonic, rhythmic inspiration
• Allowing composition to become therapeutic expression

4. Pulling Inspiration from Life Experiences

• What narrative/story are you trying to tell?
• How do you convert that narrative/story sonically?
• Drawing creativity effectively from personal life experience

5. Methods for Self-Exploration

• Self-Mindfulness
• Meditation
• Tapping into inner thoughts
• Journaling
• Collaboration

6. Barriers In Composition

• The challenge of vulnerability
• Dealing with self-doubt
• Embracing efficiency
• Why "perfection" is dangerous

A math lover, former steel factory worker, and proud resident of Gary, Indiana, Jlin (née Jerrilynn Patton) has become one of the most distinctive composers in America and one of the most influential women in electronic music. Jlin's signature sound builds on the Chicago footwork style of her origins, expanding to embrace diverse influences (ranging from Igor Stravinsky and Philip Glass to Miles Davis and Eartha Kitt) that give her complex percussion-driven work a sophisticated polyrhythmic sound that is all its own.

Jlin's thrilling, emotional, and multidimensional compositions have earned her praise as “one of the most forward-thinking contemporary composers in any genre” (Pitchfork). Jlin was a 2023 Pulitzer Prize nominee for Perspective – originally commissioned and performed by Third Coast Percussion. Her albums Dark Energy (2015) and Black Origami (2017) received critical acclaim and have been featured in "best of" lists in The New York Times, The Wire, LA Times, Rolling Stone, The Guardian, and Vogue.

Referencing a wide range of musical movements and techniques, Jlin has collaborated with contemporary artists including William Basinski, Dope Saint Jude, Holly Herndon, Zora Jones, and the late, iconic SOPHIE. She has remixed works for major artists including Björk, Max Richter, Martin Gore (of Depeche Mode), Galya Bisengalieva, Marie Davidson, Nina Kraviz, Ben Frost, and others. In the last decade, Jlin has been commissioned by the Kronos Quartet, Third Coast Percussion, the Pathos Quartet, legendary choreographers Wayne McGregor & Kyle Abraham, and fashion designer Rick Owens. Jlin was named a 2023 USA Artists Fellow.
